The Wings Celebrate of Year of Growth and Achievements

The Wings of Steel held their 2018 Awards banquet on Sunday June 10, at the Democrat Club in Blackwood. Coach Paul Valentine opened the luncheon with thanks and gratitude to Coach Tom Brake and his wife Lynn along with team manager Lori Kile and her husband Bill. The parents were also recognized for their support in getting the players to practices, home and away games and all the volunteering for our biggest and most successful fundraiser the annual Wings of Steel Golf outing directed by Mike Costantino.

2018 Disabled Festival, Chicago ILL

This year the Wings of Steel travelled to the Windy city to play in the annual tournament. Because this was the biggest year yet for the most teams entered, 130 plus nation side, the schedule was divided over 2 weekends, with the Wings playing a rare Thursday night game. Some players didn’t arrive till game time, and Coach Valentine scrambled to assemble a lineup. Despite being short-handed the Wings behind Paulie “Freight Train” Tursi, in nets and a hat trick by Xander Satterfield the Wings won 5-0 against the Minnesota Wild. Game 2 on Friday morning saw the Wings get a hat trick from Robert “the Beast” Vettese as they defeated the Hornets Sled Skaters 4-1. Matt Chowansky also scored for the Wings as he continued his torrid weekend. The Wings made it into the semifinals, which was as good as we had hoped. Mikayla Johnson would score her first goal as a Wing over the weekend.

Cherokee Chiefs help Wings raise some money with benefit game

The Cherokee Chiefs took some time out from their busy hockey schedule to take on the Wings of Steel in a sled hockey game on Sunday at Voorhees Skate Zone. The Chiefs got into sleds for the first time and skated against the Wings in an effort to raise some money for the sled hockey team. With the Flyers Cup starting this week and JVA playoffs last night the Chiefs showed up with 14 players and Coach Scott McKay and Matt Pinto to attempt sled hockey and experience what these kids do. RJ Conrad, senior goalie for Cherokee was outstanding in nets as the Wings peppered him with shots.

Cherokee Chiefs Ice Hockey vs Wings of Steel Sled Team

The Champion Cherokee Hockey Team will get off their skates and drop into a sled as they challenge the Wings of Steel sled hockey team for this fundraising event. It’s a friendly hockey competition that will showcase our Wings of Steel and the athletes who play adaptive sports as they host the able bodied Cherokee team. Tickets are $10 and there will be 50/50’s and door prizes. Come out and cheer for your teams! It’s all in good fun and for a great cause supporting local adaptive sports.
